The 4th Annual Alabama Big Three HBCU Scholarship Gala
April 8, 2011
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The Washington DC Metro Alumni Chapters of Alabama A&M University; Alabama State University; and Tuskegee University respectively, announced today the 4th Annual Alabama Big Three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Scholarship Gala. The event’s theme is “Creating Opportunities for Educational Excellence” and it occurs on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Washington Navy Yard Catering and Conference Center, 1454 Parson’s Avenue SE, Washington, D.C.
“The remarkable history of these three universities is one of commitment to promoting excellence in education through professional development, community service and scholarships,” stated Alabama A&M University Washington, DC Metro Area Alumni Chapter President Dr. SanYvette Williams-Foy. “The achievements of these distinguished universities remind us of the great things that can be accomplished when we are united around shared values and when we work together toward a common goal.”
A silent auction begins at 7 p.m., the dinner starts at 8 p.m., and the gala is from 9:30 p.m. until midnight.
“The Alabama Big 3 gala goes a long way in helping students realize their dream of an education beyond high school.” stated Alabama State University NAA Metro Washington DC Chapter president, Howard Watkins. “One of our priorities, through this joint venture, is to help lessen the financial burden of obtaining a college education.”
For the past four years, this event has played an important role in raising funds for students to obtain their educational goals. The three organizations look forward to the community’s support and an evening where we come together to make dreams become a reality for DC area students and their families.
“As students matriculate, they may endure economic challenges,” stated Tuskegee University Washington Tuskegee Alumni Club President, Richard Mathis. “Proceeds from this event, enable us to assist students in addressing these challenges by providing scholarships to local students who have elected to attend one of the Alabama Big 3 HBCUs.”
