Lanham, MD, October 1, 2014 – This year, breast cancer will change the lives of more than 234,580 people and their families. It is important that we do our part to improve the everyday lives of those affected by breast cancer past, present and future.

Important facts about Breast Cancer:

• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers
• About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime

The American Cancer Society's estimates for breast cancer in the United States are:

• An estimated 64,640 new cases of Carcinoma in Situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer)
• Approximately 39,620 women will die from breast cancer

Breast Cancer affects men as well. The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States are:

• About 2,240 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men
• About 410 men will die from breast cancer

A new report from the American Cancer Society finds that death rates from breast cancer in the United States have dropped 34% since 1990. But the rate at which new breast cancers are diagnosed increased slightly among African American women from 2006 to 2010, bringing those rates closer to those of white women, who still have the highest diagnosis rates among women ages 40 and older.
